Our region features approximately 1500 kilometres of modern, wide-shouldered highways (with close to 350 km of twinned, divided blacktop) and one of Canada's major railways.
East-West Corridor
Our east-west lifeline is the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16). One of Western Canada's two main cross-country arteries, this highway features almost 300 km of twinned expressway.
North-South Corridor
GAER also claims a key portion of Highway 43, the high-speed northern section of Alberta's North/South Trade Corridor (CANAMEX Corridor) and a major truck route linking to U.S. and Mexican markets.
Scenic Routes
Our region is also connected by the scenic Grande Alberta Trail and the Icefields Parkway. In addition to being important by-ways for the people who live here, these highways offer "rubber tire" tourists world-class scenery and easy travel routes throughout our region.
Rail
The famed Canadian National Railway line provides a "freight pipeline" between GAER and CN's flourishing West Coast terminal at Prince Rupert. This is the gateway to the burgeoning Asia-Pacific market.
Getting to GAER
In addition to our excellent highway infrastructure, many of our communities can also be accessed by:
